Aaron Asano Swenson

Marketing and Communications Coordinator

A graduate of the University of Utah Department of Theatre (BA, Theatre Studies), Aaron has over two and a half decades of experience in professional and semiprofessional theatre, having worked as an actor, playwright, costume designer, crafts/props artisan, and wardrobe supervisor for multiple companies in and around Salt Lake, including Plan-B Theatre, Pioneer Theatre Company, Salt Lake Acting Company, Pygmalion, Dark Horse Company Theatre, Salt Lake Shakespeare, Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, and Youth Theatre at the U.

Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Aaron studied Music/Dance/Theatre at Brigham Young University for exactly one year before moving to Salt Lake City. While studying at the U, Aaron began working as an instructor for Higher Ground Learning, where he stayed for nearly a decade; in addition to tutoring K-12 students in STEM and Humanities subjects, Aaron began teaching and writing test preparation curricula and eventually became HGL's Director of Test Preparation and College Admissions. Aaron was also one of the founding employees of Spy Hop Productions, a Salt Lake-based not-for-profit multimedia education company. Throughout this time, Aaron remained active in the performing arts, serving on the Board of Directors for Utah Contemporary Theatre and working regularly as a professional actor.

In 2008 Aaron began working at Pioneer Theatre Company, where he served as Wardrobe Supervisor and Head of Costume Crafts for eight seasons. A few months later, he started his career as a professional costume designer when Penny Caywood—Artistic Director of Youth Theatre at the U—asked Aaron to design costumes for their production of Nine Dragons. Aaron eventually moved into costumes and wardrobe for film and TV, working on multiple productions filming in and around Utah including Andi Mack, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, and the acclaimed A24 horror film Hereditary (dir. Ari Aster). When COVID-19 led to production shutdowns on HSM:TM:TS in early 2020, Aaron returned to the University of Utah as Marketing and Communications Coordinator for the Department of Theatre.

In addition to his work for the Department of Theatre, Aaron is a freelance costume designer, stylist, actor, and writer, as well as a Graphic Designer for Plan-B Theatre.
