Secondary Education

The Theatre Education Program (TEP) prepares students for careers as secondary school theatre teachers and directors of theatre education programs at regional professional theatre companies and festivals. Teaching theatre in secondary schools---as well as designing, managing, and assessing theatre education outreach initiatives--requires an in-depth knowledge of subject matter, skills in applying educational concepts and principles with diverse learners, and an imaginative grasp of the contexts within which theatre education might occur. Candidates for teaching certificates take the required theatre core in the areas of acting, design, directing, dramaturgy, history, literature, playwriting and playmaking, and production. Students also complete the TEP core (30 semester hours) which includes an intensive focus on methods of teaching theatre and participation in curricular, co-curricular, and extra curricular field experiences. Additionally, students complete 21 semester hours through the graduate School of Education (GSE) to refine critical teaching skills. Some hours taken through GSE may be credited toward a Master's Degree based on prior graduate admission.

The TEP is designed to prepare outstanding theatre educators, and leaders in the field of educational theatre.

As part of the TEP curriculum students work with Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC) as dramatrugs and prepare process drama pre-shows in support of PTC productions.

Application and Admission to the Graduate School of Education

Students electing the Theatre Education Program will be dually enrolled in TEP and in the Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP), administered by the graduate School of Education. Enrollment in both programs is competitive and selective. The Graduate School of Education admits students to STEP once a year.

The Admissions Committee meets in February and includes faculty from the Department of Educational Studies and each of the colleges involved in teacher education (Humanities, Fine Arts, Science, Social Science, and Health).

Admission is based upon letters of recommendation, a writing sample essay, a written personal statement, and cumulative grade point average. The admissions committee also considers grades in major and minor courses, the difficulty of prior course work, and trends in performance. There are no minimum cutoff levels on any candidate's potential to succeed in the program.
