This is Gage’s sixteenth year in the Department of Theatre and in July 0f 2009 was appointed Department Chair. He came to the University of Utah in 1994 as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre. During that time Gage has taught courses in set design, scenography, drafting, drawing and production design for film/video. In addition to his teaching he has designed both sets and costumes for the department’s Babcock and Studio Theatres, and for both the Classical Greek Theatre Tour and Salt Lake Shakespeare. In 2000 he was awarded a University of Utah John R. Park Teaching Fellowship. Gage’s set design students have received numerous awards at the American College Theatre Festival, including recognition at both the regional and national festivals.
Elsewhere, Gage is the Resident Set Designer for the Idaho Shakespeare Festival in Boise, Idaho. Gage's regional theatre and opera set design credits include Great Lakes Theatre Festival Cleveland ,OH., Pioneer Theatre Company Salt lake City, UT., Actors Theatre of Phoenix Phoenix, AZ., Childsplay Tempe, AZ., and Utah Opera, Salt lake City, UT. For television he has art directed numerous productions for ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, HBO, SHOWTIME, ESPN, DISNEY, VH-1, and MTV.
Gage received a CableACE Award for Art Direction on the SHOWTIME film Mastergate, and his set designs for Anne of Green Gables at Childsplay in Arizona, and Hamlet at the Idaho Shakespeare Festival were selected for the US design exhibit at the 1999 and 2003 Prague Quadrennial Stage Design Exposition in the Czech Republic.
Gage holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. He is a member of United Scenic Artist Local–829, the American Academy of Television Arts and Science, and USITT.
