A jealous king, a banished queen, a newborn royal daughter saved from death and raised by a shepherd— a Shakespearean tragedy, right?  Wrong!  Although it takes sixteen years to get there, this play has a happy ending.  Guest director Michael Barakiva is sponsored by a grant through Pioneer Memorial Theatre and the R. Harold Burton Foundation.

The University of Utah Department of Theatre presents Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, November 7-11 and 15-18 in the Babcock Theatre. From dreary Sicilia to lush Bohemia, from tragic beginning to miraculous ending, the power of repentance brings THE WINTER'S TALE to its joyous conclusion.  Guest director Michael Barakiva directs the Department’s annual senior show.

Show times are 7:30 pm Wednesday through Saturday, 7:00 pm Sunday, with a 2:00 pm matinee on Saturday, November 17.  A free panel discussion, co-sponsored by the University’s International Studies Program, will be offered at 6:00 pm on Friday, November 9 in the Babcock Theatre.  Panelists include Professors Brooke Hopkins and Jacqueline Osherow from the U of U Department of English, and Professor Bruce Young from BYU’s Department of English.  The Babcock Theatre is located downstairs from Pioneer Theatre Company, on the U of U campus.  Tickets are $12 general admission and $6 students, plus a small handling fee, and can be purchased through Kingsbury Ticket Office (581-7100) or www.kingtix.com.
