In the steamy New Orleans French Quarter, the fragile, faded Blanche DuBois desperately seeks a place in the world to call her own. But life with her sister Stella becomes unbearable as her brutish brother-in-law Stanley Kowalski digs mercilessly into her past.

The Babcock Theatre at the University of Utah presents the American classic, Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire, October 11-15 and 19-22.  Performances on Wednesday through Saturday begin at 7:30 pm, Sunday performances begin at 7:00 pm, and there will be a matinee at 2:00 pm on Saturday the 21st.  The Babcock Theatre is located on the lower level of the Simmons Pioneer Memorial Theatre on the University of Utah campus.  ASL interpreters will be available at the performance on Wednesday, October 11.

The demise of the Old South and the rise of the urban working class are mirrored in the clashes between Blanche DuBois and Stanley Kowalski.  Gentility and respect give way to earthy language and primal behavior.  As Blanche’s sister Stella embraces the grimy life of her brutish husband Stanley, Blanche clings ever more tenaciously to her romantic illusions and delusions of the old genteel ways.

In the sixty years since Marlon Brando’s Stanley first cried out for Stella, American life and culture have changed dramatically.  Yet the rich, complex characters in A Streetcar Named Desire continue to fascinate audiences.   Do we admire or despise these people: Stanley for his brutal honesty, Blanche for her pathetic attempts to keep magic and beauty in her life, and Stella for her ability to adapt to life’s harsh realities?   Audiences must search their own consciences for the answers.

Join us at the Babcock Theatre as we bring these time-honored characters to life.  Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for students.  Call Kingsbury Box Office, 581-7100 or visit the web site www.kingtix.com.
